When most of us think of Polio, we think of it as a tragic disease that has been eradicated. But Polio hasn't been eradicated, not completely anyway. At this very moment, a Polio outbreak is threatening the lives and well being of hundreds of Tajik children--children like 12-year-old Ismoil.
Two months ago, Ismoil was a healthy, active boy. He returned home one evening from playing soccer with buddies from his neighborhood. He was running a high fever and had a bad headache.
Ismoil's parents sought medical care for their boy, but lab tests did not show anything unusual. Convinced that he had picked up a summer virus, the hospital sent Ismoil home.
A few days later, Ismoil woke up and suddenly realized that he could not pick up or move his legs. He was diagnosed with polio.
